The figure skating world is in mourning after a tragic midair collision near Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2025, which killed beloved coaches and former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. The crash also claimed the lives of rising stars, coaches, and family members returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

The collision occurred when American Airlines Flight 5342, carrying 60 passengers, collided with a military Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport. Chilling footage showed the aircraft exploding in flames before crashing into the Potomac River. As of now, 28 bodies have been recovered, and officials are facing difficult recovery conditions due to icy waters and harsh weather.
