The figure skating world is in mourning after a tragic midair collision near Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2025, which killed beloved coaches and former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. The crash also claimed the lives of rising stars, coaches, and family members returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
The collision occurred when American Airlines Flight 5342, carrying 60 passengers, collided with a military Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport. Chilling footage showed the aircraft exploding in flames before crashing into the Potomac River. As of now, 28 bodies have been recovered, and officials are facing difficult recovery conditions due to icy waters and harsh weather.
Among the victims was young skater Spencer Lane, whose dreams of competing in the Olympics were tragically cut short. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance expressed condolences, while rescue teams continue their search, battling freezing conditions.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the crash, and the skating community is left reeling from the loss of two iconic coaches and the promising young talents they mentored. A vigil will be held in Wichita to honor the victims, and their legacy will live on through the skaters they inspired.
